Mennesker med utviklingshemming overmedisineres og feilmedisineres i stort omfang. Forholdene har vært kjent lenge. NFUs landsmøte krever at myndighetene må ta tak i situasjonen.

Skal mennesker med utviklingshemming få et likeverdig helsetilbud, må alle deler av helsevesenet settes i stand til å stille rett diagnose og gi riktig behandling.

Det er veldokumentert at mange mennesker med utviklingshemming gis midler mot psykiske lidelser. En fersk undersøkelse fra Universitetet i Oslo viser at dette gjelder for om lag halvparten av alle de som er voksne. Allerede i 2011 slo nåværende helsedirektør Bjørn Guldvog fast at Norge: «… manglar kompetanse til å vurdera helsesituasjonen til psykisk utviklingshemma. Me kan sjå at mistrivsel blir feiltolka som psykiatrisk sjukdom». Det er ingenting som tyder på at forholdene er blitt bedre.

Også når det gjelder medisinering mot somatiske lidelser, gjøres det alvorlige feil. En studie fra Helse Fonna (2019) viser at utviklingshemmede blir undermedisinert for alle andre lidelser enn psykiske, for eksempel hjertesykdommer. Det krever både tid, kunnskap og gode holdninger for å stille riktig diagnose når pasienten har vansker med å uttrykke seg, eller trenger ekstra tilrettelegging.

Både primær- og spesialisthelsetjenesten har et ansvar for riktig medisinering og god oppfølging. Helsetilbudet for samfunnsborgere med utviklingshemming må derfor styrkes i alle ledd.
